Discussion: Standing up for Ted Mosby
I know a lot of How I Met Your Mother fans who, when new to the fandom, list Ted Mosby as one of their least favorite characters on the show. But often as time goes on and they're into their third rounds of HIMYM-marathoning, they've grown to relate more to Ted than they ever thought possible.

Here's an interesting article where the writer stands up for Ted Mosby, and explains why he is sometimes the least popular character but why we end up relating to him:
How I Met ... Absolutely No One: The Loneliest Defender Of Ted Mosby

So, Josh fans, why do you like Ted Mosby? Is it the way that Josh Radnor brings him to life, or that you know that somewhere inside you is a hopeless romantic who likes reciting fun facts and correcting people's grammar? Share your thoughts! :)

To be honest, Ted was the only character during Season 5 that felt like a character worthy of our devotion. I love his sentimentality, his romantic notions. I love his song about the Super Date! I love that he's flawed, that's he's a bit pretentious, and that he's trying to find his place in the world.

I have to agree with you, snogged. Ted was by far my favorite character in season five. ALthough he's had his douchey moments (and who hasn't), to me he's still the most consistent character, and Josh Radnor is so adorable and lovable to me.

I love Ted, and I'm not afraid to admit it! :)

I second this comment. Ted was the best thing about Season 5.

That's a great article!

Hmm... why do I like Ted? I think it's a mix between the actual character and the way Josh portrays him. When Ted does stupid things, at least for me, he doesn't come across as a total douche. And that's because of Josh. People keep talking about NPH and yes, he's doing a great job. Barney wouldn't be the same without him. But in my opinion, the other cast members should get more credit. All the characters on the show are very likeable because of the fantastic cast.

About the character: Ted's a nice guy. I like nice guys. I like that he stole a blue French horn for Robin, that he made it rain, that he remembered that Lily wanted an Easy-Bake Oven for Christmas, that he likes kids, that he doesn't hide his romantic side ... (I'm pretty sure there's more but I'm too tired right now.)
Yeah, you can focus on the flaws. But you can also focus on the positive things.

(And you know what? I loved Ted's Empire State Building fun facts! They were interesting!)

It beggers belief a little bit, that anyone watching Season 1 could not love Ted. Because to me the POINT of Season 1 was Ted's romanticism, Ted's search, Ted's journey and his friendships. If you don't like Ted, why the hell are you watching?

He's totally adorable in Season 1 simply because he's so human. He screws up, badly, with Victoria and Robin. He doesn't know what he's doing except that he wants to follow his heart.

I love the scruffy haired mutt to death!

Personally, when I was first watching the show, I sort of disliked Ted BECAUSE he reminded me so much of myself. You know, you get all caught up in his romantic notions and his journey, and when he got together with Robin and you KNEW they weren't going to be together forever it was, for me, kind of like "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, YOU IDIOT, YOU'RE GOING TO GET YOUR HEART BROKEN!!!" And you don't want him to go through the heartache you, the viewer, have been through because you care about him too much?

I never really thought about it that way, though.

But I completely agree about Ted being the only watchable thing about season 5.

And overall, I love his douchiness, his sentimentality, his stubbornness, his idealism, his flaws, and just everything, basically. And I love the way the writer of that article put it, that we love Ted because of his flaws, and everyone else is awesome because you want to say nice things about your friends when you tell stories about when you grew up. That's how I feel for sure, that Ted is the only "real" character we see on HIMYM.

In conclusion, I LOVE TED*.

*except when I hate him. ;)

Nice. Guys. Are. Hot.

I enjoyed that article, not so much because I see much of myself in Ted, but because I agree about the filter his character goes through because he's the narrator.

For all that Ted makes massive mistakes and gets a lot of guff from the show for being mushy or douchey or selfish or what have you, I know that if I met him in real life, I'd probably be an utter goner.

If you can see past the self-criticism that goes into the narration and the slight cartoonish-ness of the whole show, what you get underneath is a genuinely sweet guy with a strong intellectual streak. Of the characters on the show, he's the one I'd most enjoy knowing IRL. And in all probability, I'd have the massive hots for him.

Ted's my favourite character on the show, I'm just gonna come right out and say it!
He's the one that I can most relate to because his character has his flaws, and when he acts strangely there's usually a reason behind it (see: season 3) but all in all, he's always had that continuity within his character. I also like his subtle, smart humour rather than the writer's recent OTT writing for Barney (sorry, he does have his moments, but lately I've been feeling an overkill.)

In the first season I think Ted's romanticism overshadows his other traits, but as you watch later seasons and then rewatch, a lot more of Ted is shown and you recognise his reasons behind things.

I think Ted is great, and maybe it is because we've seen the most of him to see why he is the way he is. But he's so human, everyone can recognise a part of themselves in Ted, but I suppose that can be said of all the characters! He messes up, like everyone but we still love him, and we sympathesise with him because most of the time he's just chasing that happy ending. Of course, a lot of his genius needs to be credited behind Josh Radnor, who plays him so well.

When you look at the actors and the characters they portray, you'd have to say that Josh and Ted are the most similar to each other, and the smaller, more flawed traits we see in Ted are mostly to create comedy rather than to define an episode, or to define his character.

I think Ted is awesome, and come on, I know we all squee when a major Robin/Barney moment comes up, but I can't be the only person who gets ridiculously excited when we catch a hint of the mother! It's so exciting, and we as the audience are rooting for him to get his happy ending :)

Big Ted/Josh love <3
